Fran, a flashy girl from Flushing, Queens, is selling make-up door-to-door when she arrives at the home of Mr. Maxwell Sheffield, a wealthy Broadway producer. He offers her a job as the live-in nanny for his three children, thrusting Fran into a life her mother, Sylvia, has wanted for her.
